Juror Statements

ANNE DUGAN
I am honored to serve as a juror for SoDak and it was a privilege to review such a great slate of films! SoDak has brought together a talented group of diverse voices with a variety of stories to tell. I was especially impressed with the breadth of techniques in animation and the creative ways in which these artists are able to manipulate their environment to create two-dimensional moving images. Part of being an artist is basing work in observation and these filmmakers have taken time to reflect back on the human experience, the natural world, and intersections between these realms.

I enjoyed the opportunity to judge a great and diverse collection of films for this year’s SoDak Motion Festival. Luca Cioci’s Medium Rare is particularly compelling with its graphic cinematography, inventive motion and mysterious plot. Dana Sink’s Power captivated me with its playful visuals and clever finale. The unique sound design and kinetic energy of Las Del Diente by Ana Perez Lopez stands out as well. Several films featured excellent design, most notably Tend and Birdlime.

The SoDak Animation Festival has brought together an amazing collection of films this year. The variety of subjects, tone, and styles create a program that’s entertaining, thought provoking, and full of emotion. It’s inspiring to see how the film makers are pushing the medium of animation to tell their unique stories in new and different ways. Kudos to the artists for sharing their visions with us!

SEE YOU IN 2020 (ish)!

The SoDak Motion Festival is a true gem of the American midwest, because nowhere else in the heartland of America can you find the world's best independent animation. The festival has also hosted guest speakers including artists and filmmakers from NBC, Troika Design, Pixar, and an awesome slew of today’s top indie animators. It’s really cool to say that you've had work show in South Dakota, and for a film festival – and for an animated film festival! It's a small and sincere event, made for animators and by animators and lovers of animation.

The 2018 event will be held October 25th in Brookings, South Dakota at the South Dakota Art Museum and on October 27th in Sioux Falls, South Dakota at the Washington Pavilion's Belbas Theatre.

THURSDAY OCTOBER 25th, South Dakota Art Museum Auditorium
